I have few doubts on the use of DNS. Please help me out !

1. Why is DNS used in GT ?

2. I have a server [claimed by me] but I want to transfer the server rank/stats to my another server of same gametype [claimed by me]. Can it be done ? How and Why it happens so ?

3. I have a server [claimed by me] and I have put the DNS. What would happen next ?

4. How to get a free DNS ? I know a website "www.noip.com" but I actually dont get it how to get a free DNS.

DNS is used when your server IP has changed. It is very useful whose ISP assigns Dynamic IP. So, once IP has change you will loose your current rank and stats. However, If you will use DNS then you can point new IP to DNS and set DNS to your Old server so that your server having new IP will be on that position.

In simple words,

Old IP : 192.168.1.1:27015 ( Server's rank is let's say 100th)

Now your IP changes to this,

New IP : 192.168.90.10:27015 ( Server's rank is 20000th because it is newly added)


So, what you need to do is, just make a DNS name and assign it the new IP address.

So, DNS contains : 192.168.90.10 is new IP.

Now Set this DNS name to your old server. Make sure you have claimed both the servers having the same PORTS!!!

Once you have set the DNS on old server you should wait for next day rank update.

Now, New server having new IP will have 100th rank.

Okay , got the process but what will happen to old IP ? If we wants to keep it running but just wants to forward old server rank to new server.

In this case, both server will be up but just wants to know if old server will have rank of new server. Does it interchange ?

How do I migrate player stats or rank between server pages?

Okay , the thing is i have two server and both claimed by me and same ID at gt.com
Now , i have made DNS for new IP and will add on old server with good rank. So what will happen is all data of old server will be shifted to new server right ? Including players stats and ranks and everything else but if i want to run server on old IP again and wants to keep it online , so will that be possible even with new ranks ? or old server will acquire ranks and data of new server also ? this was my doubt !!

The dns (domain) name simply represents an IP address.

You should always test a dns name with an ICMP echo or ping to ensure it is linked to the correct IP address.

If you replace your IP address with a dns name that is linked to that same address as before, then nothing changes.

If you then 'point' the dns to a different IP address Gametracker will begin to scan the new IP address without changing / losing the server rank or stats.

If you have two servers registered, then you can copy player stats from the 'old' server to the new server, but NOT the rank.
So the rank stays with the first server, but the stats MOVE to the new server.

There is no 'sharing' of player stats or rank possible.

hi all , if i may ...
i have claimed the server with the ip 197.207.67.206 named Bis_Dedicated_Vgayeth/GameTrackerClaimServer , then it is dead because the ip has changed to 105.108.237.144 named Classic.KillEmAll.Vgayeth , now i just don't understand what dns must i put and where ... if you may help me please ! before this one will be dead too ... so when i try to put the new ip on the dns of the old server i get the error : DNS name does not resolve to a valid IP address. & when i put the old ip on the dns of new server i get the same error ! ^^

I think you need first to google dns (Domain Name Service) to understand what it is and how it works.

'google.com' is an example of a dns name.
